When summer winds down and the leaves start to fall, it is time to think about winterizing your boat and RV. Storing your boat or RV during the colder seasons is common, but there are some steps you need to take in order to protect the quality of your boat or RV. Cleaning, prepping, and proper storage are crucial for all seasonal items that are intended to be used in the upcoming season.
Drain And Clean The Boat Or RV
Both boats and RVs need to be drained of water (either from a body of water or water used for cooking/cleaning) and waste. Removing water before storing your boat or RV will prevent it from freezing in the system and causing damage.
Before storing, you should wipe down the inside and outside of your boat or RV. Removing dust, dirt, debris, or pests will save them from spreading around the machine while in storage. Cleaning the inside and outside of both will prepare them for the next season, saving you time in the future.
Use Fuel Stabilizer
Both RVs and boats can benefit from an oil change and fuel stabilizer before going into storage. When fuel sits for too long, it can become toxic and cause engines to seize up. Letting gas sit while an RV or boat is in storage could damage internal engine components or gummy blockages to form. This will cost you time and money when you go to pull them out of storage to use in the summer.
Maintain The Battery
Disconnecting the batteries before storing your RV or boat will help them to have a longer lifespan. Disconnect the batteries and remove them from the vessel. Store in a cool dry place and check to make sure the battery stays fully charged through the fall and winter seasons. A partially charged battery is more prone to freezing, which can cause internal damage to the battery.
Cover The Boat Or RV
Depending on where the vehicle will be stored, you should find a protective covering that can withstand rain, snow, and ice. When storing an RV outside, a proper cover will protect it from UV damage as well as other external debris. Avoid using plastic, as this will trap moisture between the tarp and the RV or boat. Covering your RV or boat will keep it safe for the long term, especially if you are keeping it in storage for longer than just the winter.
Boats can benefit from shrink-wrapping when stored outdoors. Other custom covers can still protect the interior components of the boat from leaves and snow. Keeping the boat clean is the ultimate goal of a covering.
Measure Before Booking A Storage Unit
Some RVs and boats can be quite large, so before you book an indoor storage unit, make sure the measure your vessel and book a unit that gives you plenty of space around the vessel. Some storage units may not be tall enough for your boat or RV. Tour storage units or call the facility to better understand the size of a unit. Taking extra steps to measure and tour an indoor unit will help save you time and money.
The biggest unit available at 700 Block Storage is 10 x 20 x 10. We have ground floor units that are able to hold small vehicles and smaller boats.
Use A Ground Floor Unit If You Want More Security
Putting your RV or boat in a storage unit provides more security than putting it on your property or in a marina. Many storage facilities have climate-controlled units that will limit condensation and humidity. Ground floor units also help you have easy access to boats and RVs. Ground units allow you to drive right up to your unit to either store a vehicle or remove it.
